People who live in the Greater Toronto Area, are served by a system of Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) which provide health-related services and information (see phone numbers below).

If your surgeon decides that you will most likely be returning home after your operation, here’s what to expect:

Before your surgery:

  • Someone from your local CCAC will contact you to talk about your needs for physiotherapy and other services.
  • If you are alone or if family and friends can’t assist you with personal care after your surgery, the CCAC may be able to arrange for home services in advance.
  • The CCAC therapist who visits you at home before your surgery will help you figure out what Assistive devices you’ll need after surgery. This includes equipment to help you to walk, to get on and off the toilet safely and to get in and out of your bathtub or shower independently and safely. You will need to rent or buy this equipment, and in some cases, to have it installed. Ideally, this equipment should be ORDERED BEFORE your surgery, but DELIVERED or PURCHASED at a later date. The CCAC will give you a list of places where such equipment can be bought or rented.

After your surgery:
  • A physiotherapist will visit you at home within 48 hours of your discharge from hospital if you live in the Greater Toronto Area. (If you don’t live in the Greater Toronto Area, the physiotherapist will call to make an appointment.) The total number of visits you receive will depend on your progress.
  • A nurse may be sent to visit you at home after your operation, depending on your needs. Normally, your stitches or staples will be removed by your family doctor, but if this is a problem, the CCAC may arrange for a nurse to do this in your home.
  • If you are alone or if family and friends can’t help out with personal care after your surgery, the CCAC may be able to help. If haven’t already arranged for Assistive devices, the CCAC staff will talk to you and your family about what’s needed.
