- If there are no problems during the early stages of recovery, the patient will be given an appointment to see the surgeon again between six and 12 weeks after leaving the hospital. It’s a good idea for a family member or friend to come along to lend support and take notes. Prepare a list of questions beforehand and bring it along.
- It's not unusual for people to feel drained of energy for several weeks after joint replacement surgery. Encourage the patient to set realistic goals. He or she should save energy to get through the tasks of daily living and rehabilitation.
- Although most people who undergo joint replacement surgery recover without any problems, family members and close friends should know how to recognize an infection or a serious blood clot if they develop. See Know how to recognize complications.
